So, Why Are You Taking Notes?

Most people take notes for the same reason they buy vitamins.

By Silvia

Most people take notes for the same reason they buy vitamins.

They know it’s probably good for them. They’re hoping it’ll pay off later. But they’re not exactly sure how.

So the notebooks pile up. The apps multiply. The quotes and highlights sit quietly in folders, untouched.

And at some point, you pause and ask yourself:

Why am I even doing this?

Notes Shouldn’t Be Homework

Let’s be honest, note-taking has become a bit performative.

We highlight to feel productive. We save snippets like squirrels hiding acorns. We tell ourselves we’re building a “second brain,” but what we’re actually building is a digital attic.

It’s not that the ideas are bad. They’re often brilliant. It’s that we don’t know what we’re supposed to do with them next.

And if our notes aren’t changing how we think, create, or grow…Then what’s the point?

Taking Notes Is a Conversation with Your Future Self

When I started building Linko, I asked myself this question constantly.

Why do we take notes?

Not in the abstract sense. But really:What do we want from our notes six months from now? What do we hope to feel when we stumble across something we wrote two years ago?

Here’s what I realized:

We’re not taking notes to remember things. We’re taking notes to re-meet ourselves.

That version of you who scribbled something after a hard conversation. The version who connected two seemingly unrelated books. The you who once had a brilliant thought on a walk and captured it just in time.

Those moments aren’t just about knowledge. They’re breadcrumbs in the forest. They help you see who you were, who you are, and who you’re becoming.

The Best Notes Don’t Just Capture Ideas — They Change Them

Ignite by yourself

Some of my favorite moments using Linko aren’t when I write a new note.

It’s when an old one finds me again, and feels completely different.

Because I’m different now.I’ve grown. Learned new things. Lived through new experiences. And suddenly, that old note becomes a mirror, or a springboard, or a missing puzzle piece.

That’s the magic we built Ignite for.To reintroduce you to the notes you’ve forgotten — but never really lost.To help you ask better questions of your past thinking. To spark new insights from familiar thoughts.

So, Why Are You Taking Notes?

If your answer is:

  • “To build a library of what I’ve read,”
  • “To make myself smarter,”
  • “To keep everything in one place,”

— That’s a fine place to start.

But I hope you’ll eventually arrive at something deeper.

Something like:

“To stay in conversation with myself.” “To learn from the person I used to be.” “To find ideas I didn’t know I already had.

Because note-taking isn’t about remembering more. It’s about thinking better.

If that’s the kind of note-taking you want, we built Linko for you. We’d love to show you what it feels like to meet yourself again.
