Things We Won’t Do When Building a PKM App

The best thing a note app can say isn’t “Look what I did.” It’s: “Look what you just realized.”

By Silvia

In a world where AI is the new shiny toy, it’s tempting to build a knowledge app that dazzles more than it delivers.

We agree — modern PKM needs AI. It would be a fool’s errand to say no to it entirely. But how we use AI — and just as importantly, how we don’t — makes all the difference.

We’re building Linko not to showcase what AI can do, but to help people think better, feel calmer, and actually grow. That commitment shapes everything — from how we design features to the things we deliberately don’t include.

1. We Won’t Turn Note-Taking into Knowledge Chores

This is the foremost prerequisite of any PKM tool in the AI era.

It’s easy to fall into the trap of infinite templates, nested folders, and layer upon layer of tags — where every note demands decisions and “managing knowledge” becomes a second job.

We’ve seen this. We’ve felt this. And we’re designing against it.

Linko is for messy thinkers, not meticulous librarians. It doesn’t ask you to organize before you understand. Instead of building a rigid structure and asking AI to patch it later, we designed a fluid experience where ideas flow in with minimal friction. If you can send a message, you can write a note.

The system quietly helps you find structure, but it never demands it.

2. We Won’t Let AI Become a High-Maintenance Intern

AI should enhance your clarity, not drain your energy.

We’ve tested tools that hallucinate summaries, misclassify ideas, and confidently serve up nonsense. That’s not assistance — that’s babysitting.

Our approach is quieter. Linko’s AI listens more than it speaks. It’s there when you need it, but it doesn’t interrupt. It reflects, surfaces, suggests — always in context, never out of place.

That’s why we added the “Next Step” section to the note summary. To gently show you what topics you might want to explore next based on what you’ve already written. It’s a nudge, not a boast. A continuation, not a command.

3. We Won’t Lock People Into a Digital Prison

If your second brain is trapped in someone else’s product, it’s not yours.

We’ve built Linko on the principle of user data sovereignty. That means:

  • Your data is encrypted on our backend if you choose to make it private
  • You can export everything in common formats whenever you want.
  • You don’t need to learn a new API just to move your thoughts elsewhere.

We don’t build moats. We build bridges.

We’re not interested in holding your data hostage. We’re interested in earning your trust.

4. We Won’t Call It Personalized If It’s Not

Many knowledge tools layer generic AI over personal content and call it personalized. But personalization means more than adding your name to a chatbot.

In Linko, personalization starts with understanding your thinking. Our AI recommendations are based on your past notes. Our auto-tagging isn’t just generic categorization — it reflects how you learn and connect ideas. That makes your knowledge base cleaner, tighter, and easier to grow over time.

We’re not building a generic AI brain. We’re building a partner that understands your mind’s landscape.

5. We Won’t Build for AI Headlines Instead of Human Flow

There’s a pressure to slap on features: AI decks! AI workflows! AI productivity co-pilots!

But novelty wears off fast. What matters is how well your tool supports your actual flow: capture → connect → create.

So we focus there.

  • How can AI make capturing effortless?
  • How can AI help you surface real insights?
  • How can AI assist in transforming scattered notes into shareable ideas?

Every part of Linko returns to that loop. That’s where the magic happens — not in the gimmicks.

In the End, It’s Not About the Tool

It’s about how you feel when you use it.

Do you feel supported, seen, and in control? Or do you feel like you’re wrestling with a black box?

We believe that a good PKM tool should make you feel smarter, not just show off how smart it is.

Because the best thing a note app can say isn’t “Look what I did.” It’s: “Look what you just realized.”
